7-Eleven’s Slurpee BYO Cup Day returns
Retail chain 7-Eleven has turned its Slurpee BYO Cup Day into an annual event, running it again today.
The campaign, devised by Leo Burnett Melbourne, allows customers to bring their own cup, container or fishbowl to fill with almost as much Slurpee mixture as they want.
Running all day today, the drink’s Facebook page is full of users uploading their receptacles, providing it’s no bigger than 260mm high by 230mm wide.
The campaign has been shortlisted for the Mumbrella Award for Bravery in next week’s Mumbrella Awards.
Now in its second year, the campaign won two silver and a bronze lion at the Cannes Festival of Creativity this June.
Great promotion sadly ruined by employees. I got greasies by staff for bringing in a bucket that fit the requirements perfectly but still took a lot of Slurpee. And if you look on the Facebook page there are many disgruntled people saying that lots and lots of stores have turned off their machines or are saying the promotion is over when it clearly isn’t. Obviously there is a disconnect between employees and the marketing team….

Must only be on Facebook. Didn’t see anything around the city for this otherwise I would have joined in.

This is a genius connection with their target market . . . . my teenage daughters love slurpees and this event was enjoyed by them and their friends. Great consumer engagement.

I went to the local 7-Eleven store in the city central Sydney with a 2L jug. The employee behind the counter immediately ran up to me and snatched the jug away from the Slurpee machine telling me to leave. He wouldn’t accept my claim that it was Slurpee BYO Day. I’m not sure if head office at 7-Eleven had told all its stores about it or whether some stores refused to comply.

Campaign worked a treat. The kids took a container to the local shop and got their fill. Now at home sick with tummy aches!
