800 Words debuts strongly for Seven while Sunrise spill coverage from London beats Today

The premiere episode of Australian drama 800 words was a winner for Channel Seven last night as the most-watched entertainment program of the evening, grabbing 1.219m viewers at 8.40pm.

Seven has been heavily promoting the show starring Erik Thompson as it looks to kick start its ratings performance after the Restaurant Revolution flop, with the show outperforming 7.30pm offerings Nine’s The Block (838,000) and The X Factor (1.136m), both of which saw their audiences slip from Monday night.

The channel also boasted a win in the breakfast battle grabbing 397,000 viewers yesterday morning for its coverage of Malcolm Turnbull taking power, despite having to broadcast from London as part of its world tour covering five countries in five days.

Rivals Nine’s Today show were on the ground in Canberra but could only manage 339,000, while hosts Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic also suffered the indignity of a gazebo falling on their heads live on air.

It seems Sunrise’s tour has paid off so far with the show pulling 411,000 viewers for its episode from Dubai on Monday, it’s biggest audience this year.

Yesterday Seven took a commanding 24.8 per cent audience share, with Nine getting an 18.2 per cent share, Ten a 13.7 per cent share and ABC with 12.6 per cent and SBS with 4.6 per cent of the night’s share.

Despite recording a slow start Ten’s The Biggest Loser is gaining weight with 726,000 viewers tuning in to see the trainers weigh-in after subjecting themselves to the contestant’s diets. This was up from the 646,000 viewers who watched the launch episode according to OzTam overnight ratings.

Nine News ran away from its rivals in the news race as it pulled 1.223m viewers at 6pm and 1.166m at 6.30pm, ahead of Seven News with 1.064m at 6pm and 980,000 for its 6.30pm and Today Tonight combination.
