They couldn’t get a live picture out of a capital city? It’s not as if it was breaking news – Rann announced days before that he was holding the news conference. And it sounds like it’s coming down a mobile phone. I know for a fact that ABC Radio in Adelaide had a live, broadcast-quality feed. Could not ABC 24 at least have tapped into that?
If you are going to run a 24-hour TV news channel, you need not only adequate resources but also competent producers/editors. 24 would seem to have neither. A third-rate effort.

When Sky News in London covered the 1990 Poll Tax riots the 1 year old broadcaster used tape cameras to cover the event. This was due to the lack of satellite uplink vehicles and fibre-inject points. Rupert Murdoch, (with all his faults) rang up ‘his’ Sky News and asked why Sky News couldn’t ‘go live?’ With one telephone call Sky News management was able to secure a number of uplink trucks.
You only need to look at their coverage of the recent London riots to see how well their live product has been improved over the pass twenty plus years. They are fast, their journalists are out and about and they are live.
If ABC News 24 is to be taken seriously, they need to get their journalist out on the road and get them live! If not the News 24 should be closed down and the money re-directed to the great network of ABC Radio

ABC News 24 is embarrassingly bad. Clearly under resourced, watched by few, and playing second fiddle to SKY News. Whether the money goes to ABC Radio, TV Drama, Comedy or on-line, whatever they’re paying for what they have now is taxpayer’s money wasted.

It’s still better than their coverage of teh Japan Tsunami…
