ABC overhauls main TV channel with new name, identity and theme tune
The ABC is delivering a brand refresh to its main TV channel including a new name and series of idents around the theme of ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’, with band Hunters & Collectors re-recording their classic hit to be the anthem for the channel.
ABC1 will become known as just ABC, with the broadcaster claiming the move was the result of research showing people said they watch the ABC, rather than ABC1.
New station idents played in between programs will use film clips sourced from around Australia created by regional communities sourced from ABC Open’s library, whilst on-air personalities and real Australians appear in others.

Diana Costantini, ABC Television head of marketing and communications said: “We’ve captured absolute gold using real-life Aussies in our idents. This rebrand is about providing a stage and the magic comes from authenticity, diversity and a few damn fine yarns as told by colourful Australian characters.”
The channel is also embracing the new tagline #ourabc, although the “worm” logo will remain without the traditional ABC typography.
“Now more than ever, ABC Television needs to be relevant to all Australians and our new positioning and branding demonstrates the role of our main channel beautifully,” said Richard Finlayson, ABC director of television.
“ABC also acts as our gateway to more targeted content on ABC2, ABC4Kids, ABC3, ABC News 24 and increasingly ABC iview. There really is something for everyone on ABC Television – everywhere, every day.”

and they claim they don’t waste money? what’s the cost of the research, licensing etc etc etc. bring on the efficiency dividend.

I like the spots, but going back to the old logo makes these look like something out of the 1970s. They should have stuck with the reflective metal look. Much more contemporary.

Is the change because they have recognised, like most of us that, it’s not OUR ABC, but THEIR ABC. And we’re paying $1.2 Billion to service a very small segment of the Australian community. I’m all for getting rid of it.

It has been OUR ABC for decades. However those on the political Right want it to be their ABC. The Howard government tried hard to instil a right wing bias and failed and the Abbott government will too. It is not possible to run a biased political coverage under the ABC charter.

It would be appropriate for the ABC to be OUR ABC by making sure its bias is corrected, at the moment it is a left wing media outlet, it does not offer both points of view. After all WE all pay for its existance.

Waste of money! Shouldn’t have messed with name to begin with. Yawn.

Waste of money? Oh for goodness sake, they have as much right to brand and re-brand and fight for audience share just like any of the other networks…

I love these ads they are quirky and fun, and the message is ABC’s truth. Strong marketing – well done. If the federal government wants the ABC to be more fiscally responsible then good advertising is a great start. Well done.

Sorry Wang but after many inquiries into bias on the ABC none have been found. What is obvious however is that it does not have a Right bias. That is a long way from being biased to the left.

Really happy to see this. The shiny chrome version was way to specific to trends in the late 90s, and 00s, whereas the 1975-2001 era logo was much more timeless.

Lindsay you have to be joking, the investigation was conducted by the ABC

No Wang far from it.
If you think the ABC is biased, prove your point by gathering the evidence and lodging a complaint. However just remember if you do, not complying with your right wing political views is not proving bias nor is it even evidence of showing bias.

Lindsay, you make an assumption I’m right wing, anecdotally any one with a mind could observe in the past 9 months, the ABC present only one point of view. It is unhealthy for an organisation funded by all people in this country to not put all points of view in their medium, this includes Greens etc. if you really believe the ABC is not biased, you are not watching their programmes

Sorry Wang if you were offended by being called a Right-winger. But it is only Right-wingers who make the unfounded assertion the ABC is biased to the Left. It is also only Right-wingers who claim the ABC only puts one point of view. Q&A and the Drum both have guests from the Right and the Left and on radio all the announcers go to a lot of trouble to make sure their programs are balanced.
All regular ABC viewers know this.

Lindsay, my viewing includes the ABC,a fter watching Q&A and the 7.30 Report and others for the past 3 years, you would have to blind and deaf to see the content is extremely biased. The ABC makes little effort to balance it’s content, a case in point is the recent “12 Suicide attempts on Christmas Island” very little fact checking by the ABC, it was all about how bad the government has treated Illegal Immigrants. The facts proved that the report was incorrect, the ABC ran in like a frenzied Clive Palmer at a Hamburger stand. I’m afraid we have to agree to disagree. I resent paying for unbalanced reporting and programming and would not resist funding being reduced for the ABC, unless it becomes more balanced. That includes reducing the number of biased reporters or talking heads. It is meant to be for ALL Australians.

Well it is obvious we will never agree. You have strong views, but rely on your own bias to confirm what you already know. Unfortunately perceived knowledge is often different from reality. If you keep an open mind you will discover the ABC is the most reliable news provider in the country. You just might also discover it is the news which disappoints not the supplier.
