Southern Cross Austereo executive Adam Lang has been appointed CEO of Fairfax Radio, as Graham Mott, current Fairfax Radio general manager steps down from day-to-day operations.

Lang is currently general manager Sydney and national director of operations of metropolitan radio at Southern Cross Austereo. He will begin at Fairfax on 1 March.

Fairfax Radio’s acting executive chairman, Michael Anderson said: “We are fortunate to have a talented person in Adam Lang to lead Fairfax Radio. Adam is an outstanding media executive and will add great value to the group.”

Fairfax Radio owns Melbourne’s 3AW and Magic, Sydney’s 2UE, Brisbane’s 4BC and 4BH and Perth’s 6PR and 96FM.

Of his appointment, Lang said: “The chance to lead Fairfax Radio is a rare opportunity in media. Fairfax Radio has some of the great heritage brands in Australian radio with phenomenal talent on and off air.”

“I’m delighted to be working with Fairfax Chief Executive Greg Hywood, and the whole Fairfax Radio team and look forward to getting started.”

Of Mott’s departure, Anderson said: “Graham has been a guiding force in helping Fairfax Radio navigate a challenging environment over last four years and I’m pleased that his experience after 43 years in radio will continue to make a valuable contribution to the group.”

“Graham advised me that following recent health issues and the intense workload of running the prospective sale process, he would like to take a break from day-to-day operations.”

In October, Fairfax backflipped on its plan to sell its radio stations with an announcement on the ASX: “Despite strong interest from multiple entries, no party in the process has ultimately been able to put forward a proposal that is acceptable to Fairfax Media.”

Mott said of his departure: “It has been a rewarding and professionally gratifying experience to lead such talented and respected people over the years.”

“I’d like to acknowledge the effort that was put in by everybody during the sale process. It was a difficult and challenging time for our staff and very unsettling, particularly for our team at 2UE.”

In late November, 2UE lost its general manager Tim McDermott to DMG Radio.

Lang is also noted for his sartorial style, including appearing in a video earlier this year tutoring staff in how to tie a Windsor not.
