Just to correct you there AFL is usually televised on 7Mate in Sydney and Brisbane, however yesterday’s game screened on the primary channel.

Thanks for flagging James. Misread the Oztam coding which still had 7Mate.

According to this Tweet: https://twitter.com/DanGinnane/status/516069705333755904 7mate had 25k-52k viewers during the AFL Grand Final.
Channel 7’s decision not to simulcast the biggest rating event of the year on their SD and HD channels for “commercial reasons” delivered only incremental advertising revenue at best.

Yes most of the viewers it picked up were in the Southern states when they relentlessly hammer you will AFL from Breakfast to Dinner,in Sydney they have been losing viewers some 440000 less watched the GF since the AFL helped Swans win their first flag.
Just not seen it mentioned I mean that why the AFL threw money at Sydney dont seem to be doing much go does it

Good figures for an average audience over the 3 odd hours, considering most swans fans probably turned the telly off hallway through!

Well done for a great Australian Game but we have seriously got to do something about this non-HD broadcasts for our major sports, AFL, NRL, Formula One etc.

It’s not all gloom and doom for Aussie sports fans – Channel 7 managed to screen the Irish hurling final in HD early Sunday morning…

What are you basing the “most watched” label on? The AFL Grand Final averaged 3.7m viewers as stated, but I’m pretty sure both NRL State Of Origin matches averaged around 4m viewers (metro + regional).
