Alpha Magazine launches iPad app

News Magazines sport title Alpha has unveiled its iPad app.

The announcement:

The chief executive officer of News Magazines, Sandra Hook, today announced the launch of its first magazine iPad application, the Alpha app, Australia’s No.1 sports magazine.

Alpha’s new app will be available from the iTunes store on Wednesday, December 8, with its launch issue available for only $2.49.

“With the Alpha app News Magazines begins its digital roll-out that will see a period of discovery. The learnings we take from the Alpha app three-month trial will help us develop the optimum experience for both readers and advertisers as we seek to capitalise on the very best that new tablet technologies can deliver,” said Ms Hook.

The Alpha digital magazine will feature all the content from the monthly print magazine re-imagined for a fully interactive experience. Alpha readers will be able to access deeper and richer content through the app. The digital magazine will take readers behind the scenes of photo shoots, provide exclusive video interviews with big name stars and photo galleries featuring the world’s best sports images.

“Alpha magazine is a terrific publication and now will have the first dedicated sports magazine iPad app in Australia,” said Heath Kelly, editor, Alpha.

“We have worked hard to develop an app that delivers our readers an immersive experience which is well beyond a static replica of the printed magazine.

“Our readers know that at Alpha we are ‘mad about sport’. The app exemplifies this passion by giving our loyal readers a new level of engagement to further enhance their love of sport,” said Mr Kelly.

Alpha’s launch edition for the iPad will feature:

• A demonstration on the functionality of the app by champion swimmer Geoff Huegill as well as an exclusive video interview on his legendary Commonwealth Games win

• Behind-the-scenes footage of the photo shoot with Mark Bosnich plus an exclusive one-on-one interview with the one-time Australian soccer star

• Video interview with Channel 9’s cricket commentary team on their favourite ever Ashes moment filmed at the SCG

• The use of ‘hot spots’ which allow readers to interact with the magazine at the press of a button

• Photo galleries showcasing the greatest images from the world of sport

Ms Hook continued, “News Magazines already leads in multi-platform brands and we are committed to offering our advertisers further innovative opportunities to engage with our titles.

“This is a hugely exciting time as we evolve our brands and expand our reach, delivering to a new generation of readers.

“With the recent launch of Alpha’s website and now the app, Alpha is positioned perfectly for advertisers to work with us to reach a highly engaged male audience who love sport no matter what their preference or platform,” said Ms Hook.

Launch advertising partners include Asics, Hyundai and Vodafone.

The Alpha app was conceived and designed by the magazine’s editorial team together with News Magazines’ digital team.
