The announcement:

News Limited chairman and chief executive John Hartigan today announced the appointment of Andrew Holman as editor of The Cairns Post.

Mr Holman, currently deputy editor of The Advertiser in Adelaide, replaces Andrew Webster, who is considering another senior role within the company.

Mr Hartigan said: “I’m delighted that someone of Andrew’s calibre is able to take on the challenge of editing The Cairns Post, which is a unique paper in a unique market.

“Andrew is one of our most experienced journalists, having held senior roles in both community and regional papers as well as major metros and Sundays,” Mr Hartigan said.

He added: “The Cairns Post is the cornerstone of its community, which has been hit hard by the global financial crisis. Andrew’s understanding of regional news will be a huge asset as the paper champions its readers and its town in difficult times.”

Mr Hartigan also paid tribute to Mr Webster’s editorship over the last 15 months. “Andrew brought incredible energy to The Cairns Post and his talents will be valuable on one of our bigger papers,” he said.

Mr Holman began his career in 1976 as a cadet reporter at The Islander newspaper on Kangaroo Island, later working on regional papers in South Australia and on the Victorian regional daily, The Ballarat Courier. He was also editor of The Port Lincoln Times.

He worked for The Adelaide News before joining The Sunday Mail and most recently The Advertiser. His positions on these papers have included senior reporter, chief of staff, sports editor, and night editor at The Advertiser.

As The Advertiser’s deputy editor, Mr Holman has been instrumental in the production of the paper and its strategy as it moves to digital publishing and multiple editions.

Mr Holman said: “I’ve always loved regional newspapers so it will be an honour to edit a paper like The Cairns Post and to work with the incredibly talented team there.”

He takes up his new role next Wednesday.
