Australia’s Ashes win brings 1.4m to Nine

Channel Nine had over 1.4m metro viewers watching as Australia closed in on a whitewash over England in The Ashes fifth test on Sunday afternoon, with just under 1.4m staying tuned as the team cemented their victory and lifted the urn in the evening session.

The Ashes gave Channel Nine the top five programs yesterday with the three sessions of play as well as The Cricket Show, on at 12.30pm during the lunch interval, leading into Nine News at 6pm which grabbed more than 1.12m at 6pm.

Meanwhile Seven News at the same time averaged 961,000 metro viewers, according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.

The Big Bash League was the most watched show on Channel Ten with an average 635,000 metro viewers for the second innings of the Sydney Sixers defeat of the Adelaide Strikers, with the broadcast starting at 7pm.

However the game was fourth in its timeslot at 6.30pm and 7.30pm as Channel Nine won the early part with documentary series The Great Barrier Reef averaging 829,000 and 60 Minutes taking in 785,000 metro viewers at 7.30pm.

The ABC’s World War II drama Foyle’s War won the most viewers at 8.30pm with 920,000 watching. The Big Bash League was then second in the timeslot as Nine’s movie Knight and Day averaged  589,000 and a repeat episode of Bones averaged 524,000 metro viewers for Seven.

Nine won the night with an 18.8 per cent audience share, however Seven was close behind 17.1 per cent. Ten had a 12 per cent audience share, below the 15.2 per cent share for ABC1.
