Australian horror films take centre stage at Monster Fest

A new horror film festival has launched with the inclusion of Australian genre films; The ABCs of Death, The 25th Reich, Muirhouse and Redd Inc.

The announcement:

Monster Pictures, the notorious Australian film distributor behind THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE franchise, has launched the program for its showcase theatrical film event, Monster Fest.

“The program is a culmination of a year spent searching for the coolest, edgiest and most uniquely twisted films on the planet – we’re sure we’ve got them too, twenty-five of them in fact. You won’t be disappointed!” Neil Foley of Monster Pictures commented.

Opening the festival will be the Australian premiere of THE ABCs OF DEATH, an American/New Zealand co-production that has just premiered at the prestigious Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Closing the fest will be AMERICAN MARY, a film made by rising horror superstars and identical twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska. It recently premiered at the Film4 Fright Fest in London to rave reviews, and has the sisters being compared to the Coen Brothers.

Other titles include:

  • EXCISION – starring Beverly Hills 90210’s Annalynne McCord, Traci Lords and cult film icon John Waters
  • Irish monster flick GRABBERS
  • Elijah Wood in MANIAC
  • Spanish zombie opus REC 3 GENESIS
  • Australian veteran Nicolas Hope in REDD INC

Four local films will also have red carpet premiere screenings at the fest. These include Stephen Amis’ sci-fi comedy, THE 25th REICH and Tanzeal Rahim’s MUIRHOUSE.

“As much as Monster Fest is about the films, it’s also about guests – and we’ve got guests to die for!” says Foley.

At the very top of the line up is B-movie icon, writer/producer/director Larry Cohen. Cohen will present a night of master classes and screenings with two of his most famous titles THE STUFF and MANIAC COP.

Appearing with Cohen will be the star of several of his films, Laurene Landon. Landon has just finished a season of her amazing 1983 sword and sandal warrior epic HUNDRA at Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema. Packed houses were privileged to witness Landon introducing the film.

HUNDRA will screen as part of the ‘Night of the Women’ screenings, and Miss Landon will be joined on stage by the most iconic horror hostess on the planet, Cassandra Peterson – or as she is better known, ELVIRA. Cassandra rarely performs as Elvira these days, but she will for the ‘Night of the Woman’ event

Also attending the festival are Canadians Jen and Sylvia Soska, Alex Chandon (UK based director of INBRED), Eoin Macken (Irish based director of THE INSIDE – and also known as Sir Gwaine from TV series MERLIN), Nicolas Hope (BAD BOY BUBBY), Dan Krige (director of  REDD INC).

All red carpet premieres will also include cast and director introductions and Q&As.

Monster Fest will be book ended by parties on opening and closing nights, as well as the Gorlesque 4 ‘Monster Bash’ on Saturday November 3.

Ten days of parties, special events, master classes and horror gems old and new – all in all Monster Fest promises to be one of the most exciting film events on the calendar.
