Australia’s Got Talent hits 2.9m high note, Top Gear goes into reverse
Jack Vidgen’s win of Australia’s Got Talent pulled in one of the biggest TV audiences of the year last night, a whopping 2.855m tuning in to see the fourteen year-old crooner walk away with $250,000.
The Seven show easily won its 7.30pm timeslot, but Masterchef still pulled in a respectable 1.560m on Ten. The Block, which aired half an hour earlier on Nine, rated 1.372m, according to preliminary metro ratings from OzTam.
It was another poor night for Top Gear in the 8.30pm slot on Nine, with an audience of 596,000 – down from 657,000 a week ago.
It was soundly beaten in its timeslot by The Renovators, which followed Masterchef on Ten and drew 838,000. The home improvement show has lost more than 100,000 viewers since last week’s episode, which rated 974,000.

As a fan of Top Gear, it has several things working against it. Firstly, the commercial breaks; too many and badly placed make for an infuriating viewing experience. Secondly, saturation. You can see it on pay TV twice a day and on one of Nine’s digital channels from time to time. Yes, all repeats but how much Top Gear is too much? Thirdly, because it’s a BBC production, it runs an actual hour rather than a commercial TV hour – so commercial breaks stretch it out to an hour and a half, cutting across other things people might like to watch – QI for example.
Another reason for poor ratings might simply be that the one-trick pony needs a new trick.

As a fan of Top Gear even I’ll admit the concept’s starting to look really, really tried. But whatever Nine does, please don’t resurrect the simply abysmal Australian version. That is one thing no one should have to suffer (or is it a necessary evil of the contract they have with the BBC?)

I agree with Dan about the excessive amount of annoyingly placed ad breaks – then when you get actual ‘show’ to watch they constantly plaster the screen with even more annoying pop-up promos for other shows…

Top Gear-why is it even being discussed?Interesting to watch the second H&A show. people might be tuining in more to the footy show to see what Gary Lyon has to say about Melbourne-another big week in footy. I know I will. But I wont make the mistake again of tuining in early to catch that terrible Hamish and Andy. They are not talk show material.
