Australia’s tight cricket win draws over 1m on Nine as Kyrgios match gets 690,000 on Seven

India’s ability to grab defeat from the jaws of victory in its one day cricket match with Australia was watched by 1.04m people last night, helping Nine claim victory in the OzTam metro overnight ratings last night.

The result came on yet another night when sport dominated, with Nick Kyrgios’s straight sets demolition of Pablo Cuervas drawing a metro audience of 690,000.

Nine drew 1.04m people for India’s innings, while the first innings had 631,000 viewers. Nine then had 332,000 watching its highlights of the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under cycling event which screened after the Cricket.

According to the Oztam preliminary numbers, it was a quiet night of viewing on Ten, which experienced an audience decline without Big Bash cricket – its highest-rating show of the night being the 5pm News, which had 520,000 viewers.

On Nine and Seven, Nine’s 6:00pm bulletin drew 1.228m on the back of the cricket compared with 914,000 for Seven, while Seven News’ audience then grew to 987,000 as Nine went back to the cricket.

The dominance of sport on Seven and Nine helped both channels, with Nine winning the night with a main channel share of 23.7 per cent, Seven with 20.4 per cent, Ten with 10.6 per cent and the ABC with 9.9 per cent.
