Avengers 2 gets third biggest opening weekend of all time to topple Fast and Furious 7
The Avengers: Age of Ultron has had the third-best opening weekend of all time in Australia taking $15.7m at the box office.
Directed by Joss Whedon, the second film in Marvel’s Avengers franchise stars Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man and Australian Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and has earned $17.1m since it opened last Thursday on 760 screens.
Its first weekend’s earnings place it behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which earned $18.364m in July 2011, and The Twilight Saga: New Moon in November 2009, which took $16.1m.
Placing second over the weekend was Fast and Furious 7, which has become the highest-grossing film of the year in Australia, taking in $1.57m to boost total earnings to $40.316m.
Disney’s Cinderella came third, earning $757,881 on 205 screens to edge over the $20m total earning mark with $20.699m.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 from Sony took $552,880 to jump to $2.468m, while Home earned $516,103 to reach $18,031m in total.
Romance film The Age of Adaline came in sixth, with $479,135 on 186 screens, which sees earnings rise to $1.454m.
Seventh was The Longest Ride, which took in $449,543 to reach $3.849m, followed by Shaun the Sheep, with $288,173 to $5.866m.
While We’re Young, a comedy starring Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts, took in $228,176 on 43 screens to see total earnings rise to $791,386.
Spongebob Squarepants: Sponge Out of Water earned $224,266, reaching a total box office of $7.761m.
Boychoir, which stars Dustin Hoffman, took in $201,894 on its first weekend, and UK film Testament Of Youth took in $174,129 to reach $210,636.
