Awkward ad placement du jour
Yesterday Fairfax had some issues with strategic ad placements around the coverage of the Sydney Storms.
Today it’s the turn of its article about journo Belle Gibson who has admitted she lied about having cancer, next to an ad for “non-toxic cancer therapy”.
Yawn! Another article about the same topic. Maybe all the writers are on leave. Ever heard of trying to write something new?

Are you fucking serious – this is Adwords/Adsense not Fairfax.

Once again… Google ads are customised to the user. It very likely picked up the word “cancer” key word from the article and placed the ad accordingly. If you write an article on how bad Scientology, you can expect a “Join Scientology” ad from Google. You risk demonstrating a lack of insight into auto-ad placement and scrawlers, which is more problematic for you than Fairfax.

More disturbingly, I keep getting those ads, disguised as posts on my facebook timeline…
They say: “XXXXXX shared this 20mins ago” or “XXXX likes this 20mins ago”
I know she didn’t share it, because she passed away 🙁
