BBC iPlayer App comes to Australia
BBC Worldwide is introducing its BBC iPlayer App to Australia.
The app will make British TV shows such as Little Britain, A Bit Of Fry And Laurie and Absolutely Fabulous available for iPad users through the App store for a monthly subscription fee of AU$9.49 or AU$89.99 a year.
It is available from today.
The app enables users to stream and to download shows for offline viewing for when Wi-Fi or 3G connectivity is not available.
Jana Bennett, president of Worldwide Networks and global BBC iPlayer, said: “We launched the global BBC iPlayer because we think there’s an untapped market for the ‘best of British’ shows, both for Brits living abroad and for all those people we know have a love of great British television, nowhere more so than Australia.”
oh happy days…

Did I just wake from a snooze or is there a real increase in global competition for AU at the moment?
BBC iPlayer – so maybe ABC will feel the pressure to make more of their own content if BBC won’t let them have the shows they do now.
ASOS and others now selling fashion, bikes and shirts from abroad at much lower prices and with free delivery.
More Aussies subscribed to the FT.com than the AFR.
Whatever next?

Some people have the ability for UK websites to think I am in the UK], when I am really in Oz, so I get it free as a result…

This is AWESOME! I heard rumours about this coming to Australia, and I’m SO happy it’s here. Just downloaded the trial. Love BBC. It’ll be a nice change from commercial stations (*cough* Channel 9) hacking good BBC programs to pieces after outbidding the two (better) stations that made them popular in Australia in the first place! To you Anonymous… I think it’s a good thing… bring on some more home made content! If this forces Australia to produce more gold such as Crownies & Gruen Transfer, then bring it on! It’ll be good for Aussie jobs too. So I think it’s good news all round, as well as being a good app!
Nice work Beebs.

Although i can watch BBC from the UK, I will probably still subscribe to the BBC global service as it will provide collections of series/episodes so it will be more like a “Netflix” for BBC content…. without the panic of an episode “expiring”..
All I can say is goodbye Foxtel , you’ve overcharged me for channels I don’t want or need for too long.

@Clever – come on, share the love – it’s not that hard: Foxy Proxy allows you to set your IP to watch whatever you want.

Although the BBC app is seamless so most mainstream users will probably prefer to subscribe.
We are entering a new age of competition here – genuine competition for local paid TV services coming from the BBC.
