Any reality cooking show fan knows that there is a fine art when it comes to judging these programs…

However, Dr Mumbo can’t help but think that Justice John Nicholas who presided over today’s legal stoush over whether Nine’s The Hotplate is too similar to Seven’s My Kitchen Rules definitely found himself well out of his comfort zone.

Justice Nicholas was first forced to ask how many hours of television he would be required to watch (answer: around four hours, although you hope they will take out the ads) before telling the court: “I won’t say I will gladly do it, but I will do it if you ask me to.”

His honour also appeared a tad perplexed by testimony from Nine which referenced television/production news website TV Tonight, which revealened back in January revealed that Nine was preparing an MKR like program.

“What is TV Tonight?,” his honour was forced to ask.

“I presume that it is some sort of trade magazine…,” replied an equally confused Bruce McClintock SC, Nine’s counsel.

But while he gave a full-blooded defence of Nine’s offering it transpired McClintock isn’t the biggest fan of reality cooking TV genre either, causing much mirth in the court with the declaration: “No one would describe them as eternal works of great literature.”

Dr Mumbo looks forward to hearing Justice’s Nicholas’s review of the shows when he delivers his verdict later this week.

Also for fans of food puns can Dr Mumbo recommend you listen to Radio 2GB reporter Gil Taylor attempt at a world record for the number of puns in one live cross in his recap of the day’s events.
