Cricket on Gem beats Seven and Ten

The first day of the third Ashes test triumphed over Seven and Ten’s primetime entertainment last night, bringing 631,000 viewers to Nine’s digital channel Gem across the five capital cities.

Seven’s please Marry My Boy, which rated 585,000 viewers from 8-9pm, ranked 18th for the night, and Formal Wars fared even worse on Seven, rating 477,000, down from last week’s 676,000.

Ten was also eclipsed by Gem as its MasterChef Masterclass at 7.30pm had 591,000 viewers in the five cities.

The first session of the third Ashes test rated 631,000 for Gem and the second 356,000. On subscription TV The Ashes brought 347,000 and 220,000 viewers to Fox Sports 2 for the live game.

Big Brother, which ran from 7-8.30pm on Channel Nine, dropped below 1m viewers for the first time last night, with the 90 minute show drawing an audience of 984,000 across the five capital cities, preliminary ratings from OzTam show.

SBS second part of a two-part miniseries about the story of Van Nguyen, a Vietnamese-Australian accused of drug trafficking and executed in Singapore in 2005, won SBS its largest audience share of the week last night.

The two hour episode of Better Man, filmed in Melbourne and Vietnam, broadcast on SBS One from 8.30pm to 10.30pm and had 233,000 viewers across the five city metro giving SBS a 5.7 per cent share of the audience – behind the other networks, but better than SBS’s usual audience share. Part one aired on July 25 and had 255,000 viewers, securing a 5.2 per cent share of the audience for SBS.

The battle between morning television shows Sunrise and Today was particularly close with Today narrowly beating Sunrise with a metro audience of 365,000 while Sunrise had 357,000.
