Big Bash helps Ten beat Seven but Steve Smith’s first test innings as captain hands Nine the win

KFC Big Bash leagueLast night’s start of the T20 Big Bash League saw 681,000 metro viewers tune in for session one of the match between the Adelaide Strikers and the Melbourne Stars, helping Ten to beat Seven’s with an audience share of 16.4 per cent to 15.2 per cent.

However the short-form of the game did not prove as popular as the five day format with Nine getting 803,000 viewers for the evening session of the second test between Australia and India, as new captain Steve Smith helped steady his team’s batting.

That was the most watched non-news show of the day and helped give Nine the audience share win with the channel securing a share of 19.1 per cent, while the ABC settled for a share of 10.8 per cent.

A truncated session two of the Big Bash, with the Striker easily toppling the Stars’ target, grabbed an audience of 683,000 while the post-game coverage was watched by 380,000. Session one was the most watched show across the 16-39 and 18-49 demographics.

Despite a shorter tournament time this year Ten’s head of sport Dave Barham insisted in July the Big Bash would deliver decent ratings however the first match is down on last year’s which was watched by 804,000 viewers for session one, although that was on a Friday night, with an audience of 789,000 for session two.

Ten will be hoping to continue the good run over the Christmas break as they use the platform to promote new shows coming early in the new year I’m a Celebrity Get me Out of Here and Shark Tank.

Session two of the test match on Nine pulled an audience of 622,000 while session one was watched by 465,000.

In the 7.30pm timeslot, Nine’s Getaway was the second-most watched show after Ten’s Big Bash, grabbing an audience of 625,000, out-rating the ABC’s 7.30 which was watched by 618,000 and Seven’s Billy Connolly’s Route 66 which attracted an audience of 366,000.

Kings Cross ER, on Nine at 8.30pm, grabbed an audience of 566,000 beating the ABC’s Billy Connolly’s Big Send Off which pulled an audience of 384,000 and Seven’s Castle which saw 318,000 tune in.

In news, Nine won the night with an audience of 1.061m at 6pm and 1.023m at 6.30pm. Seven News at 6pm was watched by 911,000 and Seven News at 6.30pm or Today Tonight had an audience of 836,000.

*The story has been updated since it was first posted to reflect more accurate results for the Big Bash due to it finishing at 10.33pm instead of the scheduled finish time of 11.10pm.
