Big Brother 2014 debuts with 1.067m audience, down on last year in later timeslot

The 2014 return of Nine’s reality show Big Brother drew an audience of 1.067m, down from 1.309m last year despite a strong lead in from The Block, as the network promised viewers that this season would be “stormier” than the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

This year’s launch came six weeks later than last year’s show, and was also in a later timeslot of 8.40pm to build from the audience of 1.556m for reality renovation show The Block. The two shows helped Nine win the night with an 26.2 per cent audience share on its main channel.

Meanwhile on Seven talent show the X Factor drew an audience of 1.174m up against The Block: Glasshouse at 7.30pm, while the Amazing Race drew 634,000 viewers in the 8.30pm slot going head to head with the start of Big Brother.

Over on the ABC the return of Leigh Sales as host of 7.30 saw a significant boost in audience with 874,000 tuning in, compared with 629,000 the week before. Australian Story’s report on Palmer United Senator Jacqui Lambie drew 872,000 viewers.

In the 6pm news battle Seven News narrowly beat its rival with a metro audience of 1.21m compared with 1.206m for Nine News in the 6pm slot, dropping to 1.137m on Seven for the 6.30pm slot and 1.17m Nine. In the 7pm slot A Current Affair drew 1.237m viewers.

Ten’s biggest show for the night was the Eyewitness News at 5pm with 675,00 viewers, followed by the simulcast of Family Feud at 6pm on Ten, One and Eleven with 656,000, while Have you Been Paying Attention at 8.30pm got 465,000, up from last week’s 430,000. Its new nature show Hidden Kingdoms with Stephen Fry could only manage 342,000 at 7.30pm agains the reality franchises, down from 549,000 who last week watched David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities in the timeslot.

Among the breakfast programs The Today Show’s broadcast from the US drew an average of 305,000 viewers while Sunrise had 340,000 viewers.

While the Nine Network won the night Seven had a main channel audience share of 20.1 per cent, the ABC 14.4 per cent and Ten 10.1 per cent.
