Big Brother final sheds 1.2m viewers as Aria Awards fail to hit high note for Ten
Big Brother ended with a whimper last night pulling just 737,000 viewers to see Ryan announced the winner, more than 1.2m less metro viewers than it managed last year when 1.98m tuned in for the announcement.
The regular grand final episode which started at 8.30pm go 693,000 viewers compared to 1.31m last year when Tim Dormer was named the winner, whilst the ‘Celebration’ segment of the show managed just 662,000. However it did top the demographics for the evening taking the top three spots in the 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54s.
It also outrated Ten’s extensive coverage of the Aria Awards which ran from 8pm- 10.30pm and had 574,000 viewers on average, whilst the red carpet segment had 602,000 viewers from 7.30pm.
Nine managed a narrow win for the night on its main channel with 20.4 per cent share, whilst Seven had 19.1 per cent and Ten 14.3 per cent.
Seven had the two most-watched non-news shows of the night with Home and Away at 7pm getting 817,000 viewers, and Criminal Minds wining the 8.30-10.30pm timeslot against Big Brother and the Arias with 800,000. Westpac-funded show Air rescue dropped to 591,000 at 8pm, after getting 674,000 viewers last week.
Nine’s new show Renters airing at 7.30pm got 656,000 and was third in its timeslot, whilst the last episode in the series of Shaun Micallef’s Mad As Hell got 733,000 viewers, wining its timeslot ahead of another new Nine show Neighbours at War and Air Rescue on Seven.
The Chaser’s Media Circus had 717,000 viewers beating Big Brother at 8.30pm, up from 601,000 last week.
News once again dominated the night with nine News at 6pm the only show to break a million viewers with 1.039m, dropping to 989,000 for the 6.30pm bulletin, whilst Seven News had 959,000 at 6pm and 899,000 at 6.30pm.

The problem with Ryan winning Brother was that he looked like every other person in the house this year. Variety is the spice of life not uniformity.

It’s no surprise no one wanted to watch the boring ‘under the radar’ guy who did little to earn the $200K take out the prize. But worse is having the finale up against the ARIA’s which largely share the same younger demo.

Interesting that 9 has called for expressions of interest to be a housemate next year when Big Brother is not on 9’s advertiser promo reel (9’s contract with Endemol has expired). Or is this Endemol/production team/whatever wishful thinking?
It’s not surprising that BB hasn’t raised any political (or religious) comment this year because NOTHING HAPPENED! They moved it around so often, even to GO on a few occasions, changed the time constantly, didn’t show the popular bits like Friday Night Games, didn’t have any online feed . . .
After this year’s soporific effort on 9 (sanitised to remove any hint of anything) Endemol would be better going back to 10 – or, has been rumoured once or twice, going to Foxtel.

Print might be going down the plug hole at a rapid rate … but can free to air commercial TV be far behind it? After what passes as its news and current affairs – if it bleeds it leads, if it’s foreign it’s forgotten – Home And Away, which must be due to receive the old age pension, is the most watched show of the night. Anyone read any good books, digital or paper, lately?

Let’s face it.,this year was a teen pop fest. There was hardly any decent rock artists up for the awards this year – as a result, viewers stayed away.

Yes, his name is now Osher. He explained the name change in a lengthy blog post. Just read it. After reading it, please explain to me the reason.
