Brett Clegg handed News Corp community papers as John Webster returns to run Tassie
News Corp Australia’s CEO elect Peter Tonagh has continued the recent senior management changes at the publisher, moving Brett Clegg to the new role of managing director, community publishing.
Tonagh, who is currently chief operating officer but will succeed Julian Clark as CEO at the end of the year, has also brought back former national director of The Australian John Webster to run News Corp’s Tasmanian operations.
Clegg, the former boss of Fairfax Media’s business group, returned to News in mid-2013 as NSW general manager. The new role puts him in charge of all community titles including the NewsLocal (Sydney), Quest (Brisbane), Leader (Adelaide) and Community Newspaper Group (Perth) stable.
Webster left News in 2013 after 35 years with the company working his way up from chief sub editor on the Melbourne Herald to general manager of Cumberland Newspapers and his position at The Australian, which he held for a year before retiring. He is also a director of the Great Western Sydney Giants AFL franchise.
His role is effective from mid-November.
He will replace Tom Salom, News’ editorial business manager for Victoria, who held the Tasmanian role on an interim basis after the retirement of Rex Gardner in July.
Simon Anderson will replace Clegg in the NSW role where he will have responsibility for the commercial performance of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph.

Damian Eales appears to have skipped straight past Brett Clegg, who is now a very long way from his preferred territory.
