Campaign Brief and AdNews: An apology

hungry_jack_smokin_hotYesterday, I messed up. I stumbled upon what I thought was a new ad for Hungry Jack’s on YouTube, and we wrote a short story about it.

It was a blunder because it had actually been around for a few weeks, and we should have checked properly.

Rightly, our readers gave us the kicking we deserved for such sloppiness.

But it did give me something of an insight into the workings of some other areas of the trade press about which I had only previously had my suspicions.

You see, there have been a number of occasions where I’ve wondered if other trade titles weren’t so much as going out and finding their own stories as lifting them directly from us.

campaign_brief_smoking_hotSo I was curious to notice that an hour and 25 minutes after posting the story, what should pop up on Campaign Brief but the breaking news that “Smoking hot model + Yacht feature in new spot for Hungry Jack’s via Clemenger BBDO, Sydney”.

Quite the coincidence.

adnews_breakfastAnd at 11.54am AdNews sent out its daily email reporting a breaking campaign from, you’ve guessed it, Hungry Jack’s.

Soon Campaign Brief’s readers were hammering it:

“New ad? I saw this shit months ago.”

“This has been on air for months.”

“This ad is well past it’s sell by date as far as PR goes. It’s been on air for months. What gives? “

The same with AdNews:

“Get with the program Adnews….old old old…old footage….spot has been on for over 6 months….old gag….and if I deserve a hot model on a yacht, on the contrary…I certainly don’t deserve a cold fatty breakfast from Hungry Jack’s that I walked home with on a tray….Clems…we expected so much more….what is going on? Where’ve ya bin? ”

“This is not new, its been running for about two months?”

So, AdNews and Campaign Brief, I’m sorry, you were made to look like idiots.

Yes, I’m really, really sorry about that.

In the meantime, here’s another breaking campaign. I think it’s the new one for Tourism Australia:
