Carat holds on to $26m Disney media account, picking up New Zealand media account as well

DisneyDentsu Aegis agency Carat has retained the $26m media account for Disney, Mumbrella can reveal.

The decision comes after a multi-stage pitch process which saw up to eight media agencies line up in the initial rounds with a short list of challengers whittled down to Ikon, PHD and Starcom in the final rounds.

Carat CEO Simon Ryan confirmed the decision, which sees them pick up the media buying for Disney in New Zealand from PHD, this morning saying: “I am pleased to be continuing our relationship with Disney.”

A spokesman for Disney also confirmed the decision in a statement saying: “After a review, The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand will keep Disney’s media business with Carat in Australia and award the business in New Zealand to Carat as well.”

Mumbrella revealed the pitch back in February, with the shortlist eventually being whittled down to a decision between Carat and PHD.

It is understood Disney’s theatre productions, which are currently held by independent media agency Slingshot, were not included in the pitch.

All other agencies contacted declined to comment.

According to Nielsen, The Walt Disney Company had an estimated main media spend of $26.1m in the 12 months until December 2014.
