Cockatoo Island Film Festival’s call for entries

The inaugural Cockatoo Island Film Festival has put out its first call for entries. The film festival is run by the team behind the Dungog Film Festival and includes both Australian and international programs. The festival will run from 24-28 October.

The announcement:

This October the world will witness the birth of Australia’s most vibrant and dynamic film festival, floating in the center of spectacular Sydney Harbour on Cockatoo Island, managed by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

Featuring the largest international competitive film program in Australia, COCKATOO ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL, 24th – 28th Oct, will be the place to showcase your films with the Australian and International screen industry, along with an estimated 45,000 festival-goers who will attend.

FIVE COMPETITIVE CATEGORIES NOW OPEN

Cockatoo Island Film Festival Call for Entries has now opened. Forty-eight films will be selected for competition in the following categories: Australian Narrative, Australian Documentary, World Narrative, World Documentary. In addition over 200 works will be selected for the International and Australian Short Film Competition that will include the Young Filmmaker of the Year award.

Key Dates

  • April 4 2012 – Submissions open
  • June 22 – Early entry deadline
  • July 31 – Standard entry deadline
  • August 14 – Late (final) deadline

A host of international filmmakers, to be announced in the coming months, will head up the juries for each of the competitive categories.

Entries are also now open for non-competitive categories, “Credit Card Flicks” for exceptional examples of low budget cinema and the edgy and eclectic “Midnight Screenings”. Works in Progress are encouraged to contact the festival directly.

On introducing an International competition to the Australian festival landscape, Cockatoo Institute’s Executive Director Stavros Kazantzidis says, “Australia has a long tradition of celebrating and commending local filmmakers and their work. With the Cockatoo Island Film Festival we are proud to be recognising the very best in contemporary world cinema alongside local productions in a shared forum nestled in a spectacular location.”

Executive Director of the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust Geoff Bailey believes that the Cockatoo Island Film Festival’s unique location will be an important drawcard for filmmakers, saying, “Cockatoo Island has become one of the most sought-after cultural venues in the country. The success of our Outpost Project last year showed what an incredible canvas the island can be for creative people. Now it is the turn of the film industry. We’re sure that a host of talented Australian and international filmmakers will be very excited about having the opportunity to screen their films on this spectacular location right in the middle of Sydney Harbour.”
