Communications Council appoints first CEO Daniel Leesong

The Communications Council has appointed Daniel Leesong, former chief of staff to the immediate past Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon, as its first chief executive.

The move comes as a surprise, with many in the industry assuming that Mark Champion, seen as the architect of the body’s creation, would be most likely to get the job.

The Communications Council formed late last year as a result of the merger of the Advertising Federation of Australia (AFA), the Account Planning Group (APG) and Australasian Writers and Art Directors Association (AWARD).

Leesong will commence in the role on March 1, with other new appointments expected in the coming months.

His other experience includes roles at Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, Distilled Spirits Industry Council of Australia and Australian Hotel Associations where he held management and public affairs roles.

Mark Champion, former AFA executive director had been in the role of acting CEO prior to Leesong’s appointment.
