Countdown’s 40th anniversary celebrations watched by 965,000

The ABC’s celebration of the 40th anniversary of Countdown pulled in an audience of 965,000 from 7.30pm, overnight OzTam metro numbers show.

Part one of the documentary Countdown: Do Yourself a Favour hosted by Julia Zemiro, which focused on the 1970s, was Sunday night’s most watched non-news program, helping the ABC to an audience share of 14.1 per cent.

It beat Seven’s Surveillance Oz, which attracted an audience of 965,000, while Nine’s broadcast of the one day cricket from 6.30pm which saw Australia lose to South Africa was watched by 790,000 in the first session and 815,000 for the second session.

Seven won the night with a share of 19.2 per cent, off the back of Sunday Night which broke through the 1m viewer mark with 1.129m viewers tuning in at 6.30pm. Nine settled for an audience share of 17.6 per cent while Ten was fourth with a share of 12.2 per cent.

Seven News won the news battle with 1.127m viewers against Nine News’ 1.068m.

The Big Adventure, airing on Seven from 8.30pm, had a modest bump in viewers to 478,000 after sinking to a new season low of 444,000 last week. It was beaten by Ten’s NCIS: New Orleans which was watched by 610,000.

Also on Ten, a new episode of Modern Family at 7.30pm was watched by 685,000, with 633,000 viewers sticking around for a repeat episode at 8pm. The repeat episode of Modern Family was the most watched show amongst people aged 16 to 39, with the new episode the second most popular show amongst the demographic. Scorpion, on at 6.30pm, grabbed an audience of 521,000.

In sport, Seven’s broadcast of the V8 Supercars Round 13 at Phillip Island from 3.30pm was watched by 382,000 after 275,000 tuned in for the qualifying race from 3pm.

Friday’s Twenty/20 cricket match between Australia and South Africa was watched by 872,000 on Nine while on Saturday 606,000 tuned in to Nine’s coverage of the Four Nations Rugby League final which saw Australia dethroned by New Zealand in Sydney and Brisbane
