Cricket wins Saturday while overunning golf takes Sunday crown
The tight finish to the test match between Australia and India on Saturday evening was the most watched non-news program across the weekend on TV, with 1.150m viewers tuning in to see Nathan Lyon give the hosts the win in a tight contest.
A definite move towards non-ratings schedules has also ensured free-to-air TV audiences were down on Sunday with the overunning playoff of the Australia PGA Golf championships the most popular non-news show on Sunday with an audience of 595,000 for Seven.
Saturday’s climax of the cricket saw 777,000 people tune in for the morning session, 849,000for the afternoon before the bumper audience for the evening session when the Indian batting collapse handed Australia the win.
Nine also won both Saturday and Sunday’s battle for audience share, with 21.2 per cent and 19 per cent respectively, OzTam metro overnight figures show.
This was helped by the fact that Nine News at 6pm was the only show to break the million viewer mark on Sunday, with 1.036m, beating Seven’s News which had 881,000. However Seven’s Sunday Night at 7pm outrated Nine’s current affairs show 60 minutes, which aired at 8pm, with 836,000 to 693,000.
It also held off Nine’s Domestic Blitz, which got two former The Block contestants and celebrity helpers to transform a couple’s home but managed just 569,000 viewers, although it was not shown in Perth.
Ten’s best effort was the second repeat of Modern Family, which had 576,000 viewers at 8pm, beating Seven’s Coastwatch Oz which had 558,000 in the same timeslot.
ABC’s historical drama World Without End got 347,000 viewers at 8.30pm, while the season finale of Resurrection on Seven at 9.30pm had 291,000 viewers.

When the top non-news show is watched by less than 2.5% of Australian population, you have to start to ask yourself, is there any point in reporting these stats anymore?

The Chase was actually cancelled due to the golf playoff. At least in Sydney and Melbourne.

Thanks for the tip James,
Seven has confirmed that was the case – it didn’t come through in the ratings this morning but it’s updated now.
