More than anything else, this proves the utterly cynical nature of the awards system for Australian television achievement; the Nine Network mounting a tasteless propaganda campaign to urge views to get their man a Logie. These awards have always been a standing joke, aside perhaps from the industry-voted categories, but this now turns them into an utter farce that should be brought to an abrupt halt in the national interest. Not only did the networks once corrupt the system by buying up magazine copies to fill out the coupons on behalf of their own people. Now, David Gyngell and his program makers insult our collective intelligence by casting Karl Stefanovic as some sort of cross between the Pope and Nelson Mandela. Are our brains so fetid and our heart strings so malleable that we could fall for such a tawdry pitch? Probably. But let’s not kid ourselves here. When the cheesy, kid and dog loving Stefanovic gets his coconut on Logies night, let’s not pretend it’s because he’s any good or even “popular”. It’s because Australians are so stupid that they’ll fall for this kind of nonsense and continue to pay homage to an awards system that wouldn’t pass the credibility test in some third world hell-hole. Even the Americans, for Christ’s sake, have panels of worthies handing out gongs for this kind of thing. In Australia, we’ve got TV Week magazine and its Nine Network hustler. Or if you’re a miserable journo, a bunch of trades union hacks at the Walkleys in undignified coital union with big business. Pathetic.

No-one attacked Karl personally except for stating the bleeding obvious, that wheeling him out for some kind of Get-Karl-A-Logie appeal is tacky and bordering on the tasteless. Not to mention a manipulation of an “awards” program that’s so demonstrably corrupted as to be meaningless except to those vacuous, preening TV types who think it’s important. Willoughby sure has its cheerleaders out this afternoon. “Oh, it’s meant to be a parody!” “It’s very clever so why don’t you guys just loosen up!” Really? It’s still manipulating ordinary viewers into voting for a network star in a ballot that for sheer cynicism, is only surpassed by one of those “99 per cent Yes” elections in Soviet times. Defending the indefensible only compounds the assault on our collective intelligence, sugar coating a shabby exercise with PR-speak doesn’t make it more palatable. It’s still Yuk. But, yes, Karl IS a nice bloke. God save him from the idiots around him.

@Sharon – me too. I was hoping it was about Karl Pilkington but alas it was about the bloke from channel 9. He seems ok, the ad certainly made me feel fondly towards him – he looks like the kind of guy i could go hurling with, maybe let him take my kid on a helicopter ride, hug him and then playfully run after him, what a man – i sure wish i was my kid…(?) I bet he knows loads of people and one of his many friends is bound to be hiring so Gee Dee could maybe get a job, methinks he needs something to do….
