Dumb, Drunk and rating quite well (for ABC2)
Joe Hildebrand’s publicity blitzkrieg for ABC2′s Dumb, Drunk and Racist paid off on Wednesday night, delivering an audience of 266,000, which was a strong result for a digital channel.
The show – featuring the experiences of a group of Indians being chaperoned around Australia by the sartorially challenged News Limited journalist – was produced by Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder.
It was the third highest rating show on ABC2 since the channel launched – beaten only by an episode of The Graham Norton Show and a documentary about Queen.
However, Hildebrand was still beaten by The Big Bang Theory and Neighbours on digital channels Go and Eleven.
Dumb Drunk and Racist also gave ABC1 a hefty challenge in the 9.30 timeslot – QI rated 399,000.
Elsewhere on the primary channels, the top rating show was The Block on Nine which rated 1.511m according to preliminary overnight metro ratings from OzTam.
Seven News rated 1.302m, Nine News 1.294m and Mastcherchef 1.125m.
It was a relatively weak night for Seven which saw Australia’s Got Talent rate 881,000 and The Amazing race Australia fail to fire on 695,000, 15th for the night.
In the key advertiser demographic of 25-54, The Block was top followed by Masterchef and The Big Bang Theory.

He’s a good host. They’ve cast well.
Well done.

It was very entertaining, but the alleged premise – of showing Indians that Australians are really nice people – was clearly false. They went out of their way to create conflict and ugly moments by engaging peripheral racist freaks like the burqua lunatic.

Last night Twitter mused Hildebrand also runs the ABCNewsIntern account.
Is he trying to make the improbable leap of a permanent move Murdoch to ABC? A smart leap in the current context.

Great program. Not sure why it is nestled in on ABC 2 at 9.30pm???
Half hour was too short.

what I mean by that comment is that there is no point in preaching to the converted. Unlikely that ABC2 has racist viewers, but the program would be much more powerful on a channel with more exposure, no matter how grabbing the show title is.

Good point Me, it is after all a TV show, even though on the ABC they are still looking for ratings. The balance of “good situations” vs bad over the series looks to be skewed to Bad or sensational if the promo’s are anything to go by.
And MR “Say no to Burquas” you are a very confused kind of racist.

Regardless of what what time slot and channel it should be broadcast on, this show will have broader impact than The Grim Reaper suggests. Joe doesn’t blog on an obscure part of The Drum, he blogs on The Telegraph. Have you seen the homepage today?

Found this show insightful an entertaining, and dealt with the subject quite thoughtfully. Hildebrand usually grates on me so a pleasant surprise, and should be going out to a wider audience.
