Any theories on the rise in Fairfax's stock? Performance continues to decline, talent keeps leaving and McCarthy's pennywise/pound-foolish approach to wringing the last penny out of declining franchise, to the detriment of its long-term prospects, prevails in all its publications.

Is Fairfax stock simply riding the market's resurgent wave? Or might someone be taking a position for a takeover?

In terms of performance, circulation, managerial acumen and vision, there is simply no obvious reason for the stock to have put on almost 50% in four months.

I find the TV advert marketing for subscribers interesting.
It features nine apparently prominent Australians/journalists/"voices" - and eight of the nine are men. I assume then The Australian aren't interested in my subscription fee.

Surely the last time anyone advertised in The Australian was because the marketing mob had to announce a competition winner nationally?

On a slightly related note..... Anyone notice the ad for The Australian now running on this site ? Anyone with any knowledge of the print industry wwould have to wonder about the text of the ad ? "When did you last advertise in The Australian?" That's an odd and dangerous question to ask and does not logically lead to where the marketing team may hope.

Again, quite amusing is the line: "Share in the success of Australia's fastest growing paper".

Hee hee. Is this deliberate humour ? Surely that's like saying: "Enjoy the thrilling rush of travelling on the world's fastest-moving glacier."

Interestingly, there's no sign of Annabel Crabb in those cartoon heads, but there is one Mike Carlton who told his radio audience today that SMH had "invited" him back after that messy picket line incident... So at least they've got one rabid lefty.

Fair to say Fairfax just LOST one of its finest and certainly the most popular and recognised columnist in Ms Crabb. A serious blow in launching this masthead in particular, surely.
