Ferrier’s falling digital street kred
Dr Mumbo often enjoys the writing of Naked’s Adam Ferrier.
However, he may not rely too heavily on Ferrier when it comes to insights into the latest digital trends.
Ferrier dedicates his column in the current AdNews to extolling the joys of a new social media influence measure he’s just discovered called Klout, which, he reports, “has been open for about a month”.
Which is odd, as in fact Klout was founded around three years ago.
And he reports that Klout “has around 500,000 users so far”. Which is odd, as Klout claims to score more than 100m people.
Dr Mumbo suspects that Ferrier may have Klout muddled up with the Australian-based startup Kred, which did indeed launch in beta about a month ago with an offering that does seem not seem dissimilar to Klout.
Next week: Ferrier reveals an innovative new way of navigating the internet via a device called a “search engine“.
Whoops. I did indeed find out about klout at the same time as kred launched. So one did inform my interest in the other – and merged into one in my head. The opinion piece is about klout/kred and the implications of establishing people’s sense of self worth by how much social influence they have.
Tim I’ve no idea what you mean by a search engine? I assume it’s got something to do with alta vista?

Internet? Is this some new form of team fishing activity?

I don’t know why but the first thing that jumped in to my head when I read this was the David St Hubbins quote from Spinal Tap “it’s not your job to be as confused as Nigel…”.
Nevermind mate, mistakes happen. However surely the key question is how many people’s self worth by influenced by the workings of pretty shoddy algorithms. Which, unfortunately, so many of these tools have.

I recall how my level of self-worth and social influence could be gauged simply by how many kegs I needed at my house parties.

Dr. Mumbo,
Few corrections:
1. Kred is a product of PeopleBrowsr
2. We have over 120M profiles, and are in process of releasing access to the platform.
3. Kred is San Francisco based with offices in Sydney, London & New York.

Hi Travis,
A few corrections to your corrections…
1. We may not have mentioned that, but we certainly didn’t suggest otherwise.
2. As above
3. If you want to downplay the Australian invovlement of Kred, then so be it. Which is a pity, as i thought we had a local success story on our hands…
Cheers,
Tim – Mumbrella
Travis – do you have 120m users or have you just stolen the data of 120m other profiles?

Perhaps it’s time to leave the digital sphere to those that know.
