Filming underway of Red Dog sequel in WA

Filming has started for the sequel to 2011’s highest grossing Australian movie Red Dog in the Pilbara. The sequel will be called Blue Dog and star Brian Brown.

The release:

Blue Dog is being filmed entirely in the Pilbara and Perth

Jobs for more than 60 local crew

Bryan Brown (Australia, Beautiful Kate), John Jarratt (Wolf Creek), Levi Miller (Pan, Terra Nova) and UK actor Jason Isaacs (Fury, Harry Potter, Black Hawk Down) star in the movie

Filming of the second movie in the Red Dog franchise is now under way in the Pilbara.

Inspired by the historical and cultural characteristics of the region in the 1960s, Blue Dog will follow the early events leading up to the discovery of Red Dog on the road to Dampier.

More than 80 per cent of filming will take place in the Pilbara thanks to a $1.25 million investment through the State Government’s Royalties for Regions’ program.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the film would raise the profile of the Pilbara while also providing economic benefits to the region.

“Having the film’s cast and crew based in the region for the majority of the filming will provide significant benefit to local businesses and suppliers,” Mr Redman said.

“Blue Dog will again put the Pilbara on the international stage, highlighting its spectacular landscape and rich cultural history, which are unique tourism assets of the region.

“Diversification of the Pilbara’s economic base through industries that are not reliant on the resources industry, such as tourism, will deliver more jobs and locally generated wealth.”

Culture and the Arts Minister John Day said Blue Dog would boost the State’s screen industry and further position Western Australia as a viable film making destination.

“A highly talented crew, including more than 60 local screen practitioners, are working on the film which is being shot entirely in the State,” Mr Day said.

“Red Dog was a commercial and critical success, winning the AACTA Award for Best Film and screening at the Berlin International Film Festival. This is testament to the creativity and skills of our local screen industry, and puts Blue Dog in good stead.”
