Former Ten foreign correspondent Hamish MacDonald signs with ABC in US

Hamish MacdonaldTen’s former chief foreign correspondent Hamish MacDonald has confirmed he has signed a new contract with ABC in the US to be the network’s international affairs correspondent.

MacDonald confirmed his departure from Ten in September in  a series of tweets, but it is understood he had been tied to the network with a contract until March.

However, this morning he tweeted confirming he had landed the new role with ABC, one of the three major TV networks in the US, saying on Twitter: “Very happy to tell you I am joining @ABC America as ‘International Affairs Correspondent’, starting on Monday.”

He later confirmed he would be committing to a “few smaller” Australian projects in 2014, but will be based in London as he would be “much closer to so many of the big stories”.

In a note to staff overnight ABC News president Ben Sherwood described MacDonald as “one of the best storytellers of our generation” adding: “Hamish is a dynamic addition to our outstanding international newsgathering team.”

MacDonald told the Sydney Morning Herald Ten had been “very receptive to my reasoning”  in wanting to end his contract early.

MacDonald joined Ten in 2010 as foreign correspondent on the 6.30 with George Negus show after spending time with Channel 4 and ITV in the UK and Al Jazeera English, before being moved in late 2012 to front the relaunched late news, and last year was given his own investigative reporting series The Truth.

Last year he joined Mumbrella for a Google Hangout, which you can view below.
