Formula One to air in HD for the first time

Frustrated Australian TV fans unable to watch most free to air sport in high definition will at least get Formula One this year, Network Ten has announced.

The motor racing season will again be shown on Ten’s digital sports channel One.

The HD announcement comes after F1 said it would be providing race coverage in HD globally.

However, HD channel availability is  patchy in Australia thanks to the roll out of the new digital channels.

Each of the major networks was given the capacity to broadcast a main channel, a secondary channel in HD and an additional digital channel.

After initially simulcasting their main channels in standard and high definition, all three networks have now put differing content on all three channels, meaning their main channels are not available in HD. The ABC uses its HD channel for ABC News 24.

Ten’s HD channel is One; Seven Mate is in HD as is Nine’s GEM.

Australia is one of the few advanced media markets where its main TV networks are unavailable in HD.

The Formula One season begins in March.
