Freudenstein returns to pay TV

Richard Freudenstein, boss of News Digital Media, has joined the board of Foxtel, replacing News Ltd chairman John Hartigan.

Before his return to Australia in 2006, Freudenstein was chief operating officer of British pay TV giant BSkYB for more than five years, making him an obvious choice for the Foxtel board.

The move does not affect Freudenstein’s position as head of News Digital Media. News Ltd’s parent company News Corp is a 25% owner of Foxtel, along with Telstra, which holds 50%, and CMH.

Prior to the change, one theory doing the rounds earlier this week involved Foxtel CEO Kim Williams, one of several names linked with the top job at Telstra ahead of Sol Trujillo’s imminent departure. If so, Freudenstein would be an obvious choice to then run Foxtel. However, Williams is just one of several names currently being linked with the Telstra job.

  4. Richard is probably the best media operator in the country at the moment, so don’t be surprised to see him head up both Foxtel and News in the near future.
Telstra wants to be a media business so Kim fits the bill.
