Geelong Advertiser celebrates 175th birthday

News Corp regional title The Geelong Advertiser has celebrated its 175th birthday.

The announcement: 

Over 200 people including politicians, business leaders, athletes and celebrities who hail from Victoria’s second largest city gathered last night to celebrate the Geelong Advertiser’s 175 – year milestone.

Channel Seven newsreader Rebecca Maddern MC’d the event that was hosted by HWT chairman Penny Fowler, Victoria managing director – editorial Peter Blunden and Geelong Advertiser editor Nick Papps.

High profile guests such as 2011 Tour de France winner Cadel Evans, Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling, Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons, Federal Minister Sarah Henderson and Victorian Minister for Tourism & Major Events John Eren were served locally sourced food and wine at the invite only event.

The first edition of the Addy was printed on Saturday November 21, 1840 making it Victoria’s oldest morning newspaper brand. News Corp acquired the paper in 1987.

Today the Geelong Advertiser continues to be the leading source of news, sport and entertainment in the city with a significant reach across the Bellarine Peninsula and the Surf Coast.

The Geelong Advertiser’s editor Nick Papps said: “The Geelong Advertiser is the pulse of the city and surrounding regions and the glue that keeps the community connected to local, domestic and international news and events that are important to their lives. The population is growing rapidly and, importantly, the region is developing into a hotbed for new and emerging industries and the Addy will be marching ahead shoulder-to-shoulder with its readers to continue to enrich their lives and campaign for a strong and prosperous future.”

To mark the milestone the Geelong Advertiser today featured a souvenir wrap of the paper with today’s news in an historical format and this Saturday the first of 12 magazines celebrating the best of the Addy will be available free inside the paper.
