Go Back To Where You Came From pulls in highest ratings of 2012 for SBS

The return of SBS’s hit series of Go Back To Where You Came From has pulled in the biggest audience for the broadcaster this year.

The documentary, which this year takes six prominent Australians on the path of a refugee’s journey to Australia from their war torn country, rated 752,000 across the five metro markets according to preliminary ratings from OzTam.

The first of three episodes, this year’s debut is up 44% on last year’s, which rated 524,000.

Last year’s series gained momentum, with the final episode receiving 600,000 viewers and ranking 19th for the night.

Last night’s episode placed 10th for the evening.

The six prominent Australians include a mix of personalities and stances on the subject of refugees and asylum seekers. The cast is Catherine Deveny, Imogen Bailey, Angry Anderson, Peter Reith, Michael Smith and Allan Asher.

Produced by CordellJigsaw, the format has been sold into a number of countries and won international awards.

In the key advertising demographics, the show placed 8th in 25-54, 7th in 18-49 and 9th in 16-39.

Seven’s The X Factor won the night with 1.578m viewers. Seven had the top four shows with Seven News on 1.197m, Winners & Losers on 1.18m and Today Tonight on 1.088m all lining up behind The X Factor.

The premiere episode of US drama Smash for Seven rated 747,000.

Nine News was the highest show for Nine on 1.08m followed by Big Brother on 1.064m.

Ten’s I Will Survive rated just 364,000 across the night, placing 32nd in total viewers. The network’s highest rating show was Ten News in 12th place.

The success of Go Back To Where You Came From saw SBS climb up the channel share to 9%, still in fifth place but close behind Ten in fourth place on 10.4%. Seven won the night on 26.1% while Nine had 18.4% in second place and ABC1 had 11.6%.
