Google tops list of strongest brands

Google logoGoogle has taken the crown from Apple as the strongest brand among the world’s most valuable companies, according to the FutureBrand index.

The search engine giant edged ahead of Microsoft and Walt Disney who came in second and third respectively.

Apple dropped from first to fourth while ExxonMobil, last year’s runner-up, saw a catastrophic decline, falling to 87th place.

The FutureBrand Index, which is created by FutureBrand and sanctioned by PricewaterhouseCoopers, measures perceptions of brand strength of the world’s largest companies based on market capitalisation.

It found there was little link between the strength of the brand and its market worth.

“Our results show for the first time the extent to which the strongest in 2014 are able to transcend the positions dictated by opinions of their financial worth,” FutureBrand global head of strategy Tom Adams said.

Along with Exxonmobil, the largest fallers were PetroChina which tumbled 79 places and Wells Fargo which was 72 places worth off.

AbbVie, SABIB and Mastercard saw the greatest progress, rising 80, 72 and 67 places respectively.

The survey questioned 3,030 “informed” members of the public in 17 countries, including Australia.
