Google’s Stuart Spiteri named COO of News Digital Media

News Limited has unveiled Melbourne-born Google exec Stuart Spiteri as chief operating officer of its digital arm, News Digital Media. Spiteri joins News from Google’s Singapore office where he was head of platforms across Asia Pacific.

His brief is to drive the growth of News Digital brands news.com.au, Getprice,TrueLocal, moshtix, Foxtix, Learning Seat, The Punch and Newsource. He will also oversee New’s investments in OurDeal and SportingPulse.

News Digital Media and The Australian’s CEO Richard Freudenstein said: “Stuart brings with him over a decade of experience at the highest levels of international digital management. His deep understanding of digital technology and commercial acumen will prove great assets to the company as it continues its rapid growth.”

Spiteri commented: “News Digital Media has comfortably outgrown the market over the last five years and is now set to significantly scale its business through innovative advertising solutions, digital subscriptions and transactional revenue streams.”

“It is clear that News Digital Media is going to play a leading role in the Australian digital economy in the years to come, which is why I am so excited to be offered this role,” he added.

The last COO of News Digital Media was Nick Leeder, who became deputy CEO of The Australian in 2010. Leeder joined Google as Australian MD in March this  year.

Spiteri’s career to date includes a stint at Akamai as Asia Pacific MD, head of the marketing solutions division at Chinadotcom and a director at Economist Group.
