Guardian confirms Australian launch
The Guardian has confirmed that it is to launch a digital Australian edition.
It will be headed by the British newspaper’s deputy editor Katharine Viner and commercially backed by entrepreneur Graeme Wood.
Rumours of the launch first emerged in December last year. Wood is also behind not-for-profit website the Global Mail.
According to an article published by the Guardian overnight, the venture will launch “later this year”.
Viner said: “This is such an exciting time to be launching the Guardian in Australia. We already have a large number of Australian readers, who tell us they want more of our on-the-ground reporting, lively commentary and groundbreaking open journalism.”
The Guardian is one of the UK’s oldest quality newspapers. Its unusual ownership structure sees it run by a trust which has allowed it to run at a loss in recent years as it invests in developing its digital offering and in overseas expansion. It has already launched a US edition.
Wood said: “I’m delighted to support the Guardian’s expansion in Australia. It will add quality and diversity to our media as well as fostering a closer interaction between Australians and the rest of the world.”
Amongst existing major editorial players, the Guardian’s editorial positioning would be closest to Fairfax Media’s Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. On a smaller scale, its agenda would be similar to that of the likes of New Matilda.
I read the UK version every day (because I can’t afford The Times!). The reason I read it is it’s very international (plus great reviews and comment pieces). If I want local Aussie stuff I’ll go to the local Aussie sites. I’m not sure this is needed, but hey, I’m sure they’ve done their sums….
