Dr Mumbo

Guilty of smugness, if not indecent exposure

Fair to say the latest crop of complaints to the Ad Standards Board include some doozies.

As Mumbrella has reported, discrimination against nerds, and violence towards asterisks are among the advertising sins that made the public unhappy.

They don’t even like the Hungry Jack’s rabbits. But “indecent exposure” in the Imperial Leather ad has to be the winner.

Even if DDB Melbourne’s response to the complaint managed the feat of being both patronising and self-satisfied:

“We understand that our campaign is somewhat different to what is often seen on TV screens. We are very pleased with the result as we had such a task ahead of us given we immortalised the original TV advertisement ‘Simon Tahiti’ from the 1980’s which was a very famous advertising campaign for Imperial Leather, this TV advertisement in 1980 was like our new TV advertisement very engaging and conveys the dramatisation of luxury.”

Happily the ASB cleared the ad. Dr Mumbo has been unable to confirm whether its members did so while being a little bit sick in their mouths.
