Hamilton Island to incorporate Weibo in its second Instameet
Hamilton Island is set to incorporate high profile Weibo users as part of its second Instameet, an awards-shortlisted Australian-first social media initiative that garnered more than 800,000 likes and global publicity last time it was run.
“We’ve been using Instagram, with its 100 million active users, as one of our primary platforms to distribute compelling imagery of Hamilton Island for a while now, in conjunction with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest and YouTube for the global market,” said Sophie Baker, Hamilton Island’s Senior Communications Manager.
The move comes as the tourist island and China’s largest social network Weibo announce a partnership that the tourist destination hopes will grow its vistors from the region.
“When this combines with our exciting new Tencent Weibo partnership, for the Chinese market, Hamilton Island’s social reach will be catapulted onto an entirely new level”, said Baker.
The partnership will see Hamilton Island not only open an account on Weibo but also have a wider strategic engagement that will see them target affluent Chinese travellers through the use of ambassadors such as celebrities such as model Li Ya Hong.
“With China’s social media market nearly at one billion users, mostly on mobile, we are honoured to be partnering with Tencent Weibo to take Hamilton Island’s social media campaign to such a major growth market for Australia,” Hamilton Island says the partnership will give them access to Tencent Weibo’s hundreds of millions of users who they believe are highly engaged consumers with a high spending power.
‘Tencent Weibo’s collaboration with Hamilton Island is the very first time we have joined forces with a private island travel destination,” said Ai Fang, Tencent Weibo executive.
“(We) believe this is a groundbreaking initiative that holds significant meaning and value for both parties.”

how many of the 800.000 likes are real?
and what do they actually mean?

Brilliant initiative – makes lots of sense. I can’t imagine many other Australian organisations having any idea about Chinese social media.
