Australia shows love for The Hateful Eight, propelling Tarantino film to top of the box office

The Hateful Eight has entered the Australian box office at number one over the weekend, beating Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant into second spot.

Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, which tell the story of a bounty hunter and his prisoner taking shelter in cabin inhabited by nefarious characters, took $2.422m on 306 screens, while last week’s number one, The Revenant, managed $2.284m on 275 screens.

Goosebumps took $1.935m on 301 screens in its second week, while last year’s biggest film Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still managing to take in some big bucks more than a month after launch with $1.826m on 268 screens, with total takings of $88.275m to date.

It now looks unlikely to topple the all time record of $105m set by Avatar.

Big budget disaster film The 5th Wave continues to stutter along with $1.5m on the weekend on 201 screens, with total takings of $4.686m so far.

Meanwhile the remake of Point Break continues to limp along, taking $103,157 on 110 screens, with total takings of $5.435m so far.
