I’m a Celebrity gets 1.2m on first outing as Asian Cup final hands ABC Saturday night win

Network Ten’s new reality show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here got 1.199m viewers for its opening show and 1.119m for its Welcome to the Jungle special last night.

The ten contestants going into the African jungle were unveiled last night, and faced the first ‘Tucker Trial’ seeing former MixFM Melbourne DJ Chrissie Swan being covered in thousands of bugs in a bid to get meal tokens.

However, the weekend was dominated by sport, with Sunday night’s epic Australian Open final where Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray pulling in 2.088m for the conclusion of the long match, with 1.881m watching the first part from 7.30pm on Channel Seven, which secured an audience share of 35.9 per cent.

England’s capitulation against Australia in the tri-series cricket final saw 903,000 watch the first session, and 991,000 tune in for the conclusion according to OzTam overnight ratings.

Saturday’s TV was also a sports fest with the overrunning Asian Cup final where Australia snatched victory against South Korea in extra time to claim the crown getting 1.672m, with the match itself being watched by 1.081m.

The Australian Open ladies’ final with Serena Williams overcoming illness to beat Maria Sharapova  getting an average audience of 1.173m.

The football saw ABC dominate the audience share numbers on Saturday with 25.6 per cent on its main channel, ahead of Seven’s 18.2 per cent and Nine’s 14.8 per cent. Ten could only muster 6.8 per cent, finishing the week with 11.3 per cent overall compared to ABC’s 13.2m Nine’s 16.9 and Seven’s 24.8 per cent.

Family Feud also aired for the first time on a Sunday for Ten and got 476,000 viewers while the premiere of film Guilt Trip held onto 490,000 viewers from 8pm.

ABC’s best shot was its news at 7pm which had 806,000 viewers, while a repeat of Sherlock had 544,000 at 8pm and Antiques Roadshow got 501,000.

In the news battle Nine News got a good win with 1.306m viewers at 6pm compared to Seven’s 1.072m.

The first official ratings period week starts next Sunday with Nine’s 60 Minutes and Channel Seven’s new special interviewing victims of the Sydney siege, while ten will be showing new show Shark Tank.
