The Inbetweeners 2 in at number one as Dr Who screenings top $600k at the cinema
British comedy The Inbetweeners 2 cracked the number one spot in the Australian weekend box office rankings beating out Guardians of the Galaxy which had topped the weekend box office for the last two weeks.
In its opening weekend the film, based on the UK comedy series about four high school students which was filmed on the Gold Coast, took in $3.155m across 308 screens, beating out the Disney’s film Galaxy which took $2.733m across 480 screens, taking its total Australian box office to $19.093m.
The newest episode of Dr Who, which premiered yesterday on the ABC, was also available to fans to watch on the big screen, with the debut episode of Peter Capaldi ‘Deep Breath’ taking in $629,219 across 146 screens.
Disney nabbed third place on the rankings with its drama The Hundred-foot Journey managing $1.763m over the weekend across 320 screens. The film has made a total of $5.742m at the Australian box office since its release earlier this month.
Sci-fi movie Lucy and action film The Expendables 3 round out the top five, taking in $1.142m across 259 screens and $900,710 across 303 screens respectively.
Hercules continues to remain in the top ten, making $136, 562 across 127 screens. The film’s total Australian box office takings stands at $8.03m.
Australian film These Final Hours managed to take in $5,772 across 11 screens, taking its total box office to a disappointing $456,116 for what has been an award winning movie.
