Jackman, Watts and Weaver receive Oscar nominations

Three Australian actors, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts and Jacki Weaver have received nominations from the Academy Awards overnight.

Hugh Jackman has received an Oscar nomination for Les Misérables, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, Joaquin Phoenix in The Master and Denzel Washington in Flight.

Naomi Watts was been nominated for her role in the tsunami story The Impossible. Watts has been nominated alongside Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Quvenzhané Wallis, Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty and Emmanuelle Riva in Amour.

Jacki Weaver has also picked up a nomination for Silver Linings Playbook. She is in a category with Helen Hunt in The Sessions, Anne Hathaway in Les Misérables, Sally Field in Lincoln and Amy Adams in The Master.

It follows a nomination for all three from the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards and a BAFTA nomination for Jackman.

Jackman’s song Suddenly, from Les Misérables has been nominated in for best original song.

Australian make up artist Richard Findlater has also been nominated for best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Tami Lane, Peter Swords King for their work on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Australian cinematographer Greig Fraser has missed out for his work on Zero Dark Thirty. He won the prestigious New York Film Critic’s Circle Award for cinematography in December for the film.

Both Prometheus and The Avengers have been nominated for best visual effects. Fuel worked on both films, however the VFX company missed a nomination.
