Jess Gill named as Woolworths marketing boss
Woolworths has appointed a new GM of marketing for its supermarket brand.
Jess Gill – currently head of marketing strategy at consultancy Growth Mantra, which works with Woolworths – moves into the role previously occupied by Lizzy Ryley, who is now head of customer loyalty for the brand and also appears on Ten’s Recipe To Riches.
Gill will report in to Woolworths MD Tjeerd Jegen.
Jegen said: “Retail marketing is an extremely fast paced, dynamic space that requires a strategic mind, steady hand and cut‐through creative flair to reach our customers in a highly competitive environment. Jess is the right person for this crucial role.
“Growth Mantra has completed a number of strategic projects for Woolworths over the past 2 years and they have made a measurable impact. One of our biggest focuses right now is marketing, and Jess was the obvious choice to lead the team.”
Gill has previously worked with brands and agencies including Macquarie Bank, Telstra, Voyages Hotels & Resorts and TBWA.
Ryley moved to her new role some time ago with group marketing director Kurt Kamp providing cover for the vacancy in the meantime.
A spokesman told Mumbrella the appointment does not affect the role of Luke Dunkerley, GM of consumer and corporate marketing at the Woolworths group level.
So let me get this straight. First Luke Dunkerley gets replaced by Lizzie Ryley, who gets replaced by Kurt Kamp, who gets replaced by Jess Gill – and they’re all still at Woolworths. Talk about overstocked shelves….

Following the weekend fiasco over “Aussie Animals” books, I would like to know if Ms Gill is planning to reward loyal customers with a reprint offer of the collectors book?
The ebay vultures have derailed what could have been a very successful promotion for Woolworths. If customers who missed out on the book could register to receive one of the reprints this could help offset some of the damage caused by the inability of the company to provide enough books – given the saturation TV media marketing of the collectors books only the day before they ran out, this cold be the very least they could do. On ebay these $5 books are now going for upwards of $70 . Not a good look Woolies.
