Judging the Fairfax subbing
Sydney Morning Herald editor Darren Goodsir may have found an unlikely target as he looks to take subbing back in house, in the form of the judge who has just ordered Fairfax to pay $200,000 in defamation damages to Treasurer Joe Hockey.
In the 127 page judgement Judge White quotes a number of passages from the news stories in various Fairfax papers, and even finds time to point out a spelling error in an article by chief political correspondent Mark Kenny which made it into the papers:
“Trust that he is acting purely in the national interest; that the harsh medicine proscribed (sic) for pensioners and families is the correct formula for the economy; that the big end of town will match their sacrifice.”
Prescribed of course being the correct version of the word.
Although given the judge described some of Goodsir’s answers in cross-examination during the trial as “not convincing” the job offer may not be immediately forthcoming.
