The Kyle & Jackie O Show lie detector scandal of 2009 is to feature in a play which opens in Sydney later this month.

The incident – in which Kyle Sandilands quizzed a teenager about her sexual experiences and she blurted out that she had been raped – will be the opening scene of director David Williams’ new play The Tender Age.

Sandilands will be played by actor Shaun Foley. The play is at Carriage Works in Sydney from August 22. It is presented by companies Version 1.0 and the Australian Theatre for Young People.

Williams said: “In making The Tender Age we have explored the ways in which intimate relationships are developed in a networked, social media-dominated world. Today’s young people live in a world in which every moment, every funny joke and every drunken mistake, might be captured on a mobile phone and instantly broadcast to the world. It’s a complex legal and ethical minefield, and it makes for an important discussion point, as well as rich and exciting territory for performance.”

The original Kyle & Jackie O show interview in July 2009 drew huge complaints from listeners and plenty of criticism in the national media, which has had lasting effects and an increased scrutinising eye on the 2DayFM breakfast show which still effects the network today. The lie detector scene features briefly at the start of the play.
