Sandilands is on borrowed time. Look, he used to drive the station Bongo Van giving out prizes and cans of coke…that was where he should have stayed. These day’s he drinks the coke and looks like he’s smuggling a volkswagon under his shirt and has the gall to be critical of Magda! The guy’s an idiot and definately no “ReaL” broadcaster…you gotta be clever for that.

What a total media beat up. Yes, the guy is a tool and made a mistake (his response to the girl’s rape announcement) but is it really worth all this? The concentration camp call was off, but if someone else made the comment would it result in such media-fuelled public hysteria?

The guy is a goose and often says things in poor taste. I don’t like him, but I like listening to him – certainly more than the name-dropping (yawn) Danni Minogue.

I suggest the plummet in ratings is in large part due to the fact he was off air for a while, and Hamish and Andy’s plummeting ratings have skewed matters further… enough for you guys to craft this sensationalist story.

@Listener … “the spontaneity is gone”?? Shows you know very little about behind the scenes of commercial radio. The Program Director and promotions team would have all signed off on that Lie Detector segment – but are the first to dodge any responsibility. Typical radio – if it works – it was programming or promotions – if it doesn’t – blame the talent!

Kyle didn’t handle it well – but didn’t do anything wrong (in that instance) – he is clearly a moron and I’m all for getting rid of him. The backlash is long overdue! Do your research and you’ll see that in the last eight years, Austereo have courted “controversy” with the Lie Detector in Brisbane and Perth… it is no surprise to them that the controversy (read “free advertising”) will follow every time and you people continue to propagate it! If Austereo wants your opinion – they’ll give it to you…

Hi All,

Leave him alone, for god’s sake, the show bombed in the rating because the Boss had to be seen doing something, they are weak as.
The Mother knew what she was doing, she wanted her 15 minutes and the daughter well enough said….Kylie is one of the most talented on air personalities I have ever enjoyed listening to him, and if you got to know him like I have over the years, he’s a great guy and mate.
Don’t shut him up, or you’ll blow a great show out of the water.

As for Madam Magda Szabanski, gee hasn’t she made fun of people over her boring career, what is she show a riff off of 20 to 1 not rating! back to Jenny Craig and loss that double chin…I enjoy the way she has gone about getting fit, a but don’t throw stones unless you have not!!!

As for Australian Idol Kyle sue then as your top rating radio show had nothing to do with your TV work, fire that boring nobody, he’s comments are a waste of time.

That’s not the point. The only relevant facts are the age of the girl (a minor) and the nature of the question put to her (highly personal and broadcast to a huge audience). A child of her age should never have been put in that situation, no matter what her background.

People who complain about the Kyle and Jackie O show but have never listened to it, are making uninformed comments. If you do listen and you are offended, then turn it off.

No-one has ever considered that the girl in question may just have been a spoiled, manipulative teenager who changed the subject to avoid answering the question put to her. This girl was featured on Missing Persons (Channel 9) prior to appearing on Kyle and Jackie O. She has been running away from home and goes missing for days without contacting her mother. The Police who bought her back home had a very stern word with her about her behavior and disrespectful attitude. Her two Aunts were interviewed on TV and they both said the girl was never raped.

Now that Today FM has implemented the 7 second delay and will no doubt monitor or censor what Kyle says (if he comes back), the show just won’t be the same. The spontaneity is gone.

If you use the same mathematical formula to calculate the “18% loss or 1 in 5 listeners” then, ABC891 Adelaide lost 32.7% of 40-54s and Nova93.7 Perth dropping 22.3% across 10-17s.
Cumulative audience and % share shows 2 very different figures.

Hi Tim, separate to all the emotions about what has been said and what hasn’t, your statement that Breakfast has “lost nearly one in five of its listeners” is factually incorrect. You can’t compare share results in percentages terms i.e. 12% to 9.8% does not equate to a loss of 18% for you are calculating percentages on percentages. If you want to discuss movement in terms of how many more or less listeners a station or session has you need to use Cume audience – on this basis the decline in the overall Breakfast session is 5.7%.

My only purpose in pointing this out is to ensure that the Nielsen results are in fact reported correctly – in this case they have not been.

Actually Grant, you are correct.

MTV are responsible for broadcasting the ceremony interruption in the same way that CBS were responsible (and massively fined) for Janet Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction” at the Super Bowl. Remember, we are talking about broadcasting the event, not the event itself.

As I said before, in this case producers and hosts knew in advance what was going to be asked of the child, so even if you could count the fact that the mother asked the question as a defence, it’s not relevant in this case.

As for your other analogies, you’re clearly off the rails with those ones. This is a discussion about broadcasting, not cheating politicians or athletic hermaphrodites… More pills, perhaps?
